A bit of everything

I mentioned this month that I’m participating in a 30 day journal challenge. I think it’s the third time I’m doing it and I find it’s a good habit to develop. This time, I’ve been working in a small art journal in which I had already prepared a myriad of pages in the previous months. So I can focus on answering the prompts for the challenge. I haven’t shared any of the pages until now. This page seemed appropriate to share on my blog so this was my daily art for yesterday.

Today, I made a set of ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) for a swap I joined over on Instagram. They are called clean-up cards. The only rule is to use scraps from the bottom of your pile. Well, I’ve have these scraps in a box for almost 10 years so I think it counts! I love how they turned out and I hope the people who receive them in the swap enjoy them.

I’m also sharing a few photos from my fine motor skills activity today with a class of kindergarten students. We were doing “directed drawing.” I gave them each a set of 5 sheets on which they had illustrated instructions on how to draw certain things. Most of the students did very well on their own. I had to give more instructions to some but in general, the activity was a success. I took the time to look at how the kids were holding their pencil and the majority had a correct grasp and position.

We usually work for 45 minutes and then they get 10 minutes to use what I call “manipulation objects” from a basket: squeeze balls, stress balls, cut-down pieces of pool noodles, plastic pot scrubbers, etc. They enjoy the different textures and it’s a good exercise to relax their hands after some hard work. I’ll try to take a picture of that next time. Until then, have fun!

Drawings

Now that I’m back at work full time, I realize that daily blogging during the week is too much for me. So I think I’ll post on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from now on. With maybe an occasional weekend post.

Today is day 244 of my daily art project for 2016. Which means there’s only 1/3 of the year left! Also, I decided to keep my “free-for-all” art theme for September because I will also be participating in a free 30 day journaling challenge but I probably won’t share that on here.

Anyway, here are yesterday and today’s art: a white mandala and a shoe print zentangle.

Thanks for visiting!

Welcome 2015

Welcome 2015The last few years haven’t been very good for this blog. But it doesn’t mean that I haven’t been creative.

This past year might not have been my most creative one but I still managed to play in my art journal a few times outside of my mixed media classes (which I love attending!) I also got sucked into the Rainbow Loom madness, mostly because of the students I was working with at the time. But other than that and a bit of doodling, not much has been accomplished in the arts and crafts section of my life. It is sad but understandable considering that I never completely unpacked all my supplies and set up my studio in the almost 3 years that I’ve been living here. But that will change. I intend to move and downsize my supplies. I have way too much stuff, like a lot of people I know, and I don’t even use half of it. I already started. Slowly. It is quite surprising how hard it has become to simply put a pile of paper/magazines in the recycling bin. Or to throw away a leftover piece of ribbon or yarn. Anything can be used in mixed media. That is, if you actually DO some mixed media, not just gather material for it.

For a few years now, I have been picking a word or two to focus on throughout the year. Some of the previous words have been: fresh, simplicity, balance, move, renew. This year, I chose two words: Flow and Free. I want to feel the flow of energy and air, wear flowy skirts, go with the flow. I want to free myself of negative thoughts, things and people, take advantage of free activities and feel more free. And I knew I had chosen the right words when I found this: Flow: The 30 day journal project from Lisa Sonora (and it’s free too!) Coincidence? I think not!
